Ismail is a qualified teacher. Since his retirement, he has been reemployed by the Ministry of Education as an Adjunct Teacher.
Ismail is currently involved in the following community organisations: Chairman of Sultan Mosque; Board Member of Harmony Centre; Member of Haj Committee, Muis; Member, Lil Alamin (Blessing To All) Main Committee, Muis; Member, IRCC, Kampong Glam Member, NCC, Nee Soon South; Member, Prophet Muhammad Bursary Fund Board.
